Subject: MAXR on iPAD would be awesome!
Hi fellows,

as there is a MAC-Client allready and while I'm playing Battle for Wesnoth on iPAD and "Z" (yes, that one from the Bitmap Brothers from 1997), I was wondering if it is possible to have a MAXR-Client for iPAD? This is just perfect for round-based strategy games! Grinning So many crap games but these are the best.

So, any ideas?

Cheers,
Sandman

Hi,

I already had this idea as well, but i dont't thing that it would be that easy to realize. All software for the IPad and IPhone has to be written in Objective-C, but MAXR is written in C++. So you can not only recompile it, it has to be rewritten complety.
But I think there would may be a possibility to make it run on Android systems because there is a way to compile c++ software for Android and there is some kind of SDL port available. But since I have no Android systems here I haven't been able to test it yet ^^ And I think performance would be a big problem as well but it would just be funny to see maxr on an mobile phone Smiling

Edit: I just saw that there is an SDL port for iOS as well so maybe there is a way to use c++ much more on iOS then i thought Wink

It's no big thing to compile C++ for iOS. The entry points of the application have to be objective-c, but then you can call c++ functions. There is even such a thing as objective-c++, that are files that mix c++ and objective-c classes. I also saw that there is some port of SDL for iOS (like alzi wrote). But I haven't tried.

This would be awesome. One of the first things I searched the AppStore for when I got iPhone / iPad was M.A.X. and I still search every now and then 3 years on!

I published an iOS application this year and I'll be publishing another one in January next year, it's not that difficult. You don't need to have an iPad or iPhone to test as Xcode 4 has both the xcode IDE and iOS SDK with full simulation. The big issue my colleague and I had was that we didn't have a Mac! You can use a VM to do it, but you can't sign the application using it because it's based on the MAC address, so you could do all the dev work on a VM running OSX but would need one genuine piece of Mac hardware to be able to publish the finished application on the AppStore.

I'm iOS all the way, but I suspect that Android is probably the better platform. :-(

I'd rather prefer "real Macintosh Stuff" than these i-Pad and / or Smartphone Stuff. Wink
