Actually 8 players are possible. That's however only limited by the player textures and can (more or less) easily been increased.

Nope not yet but some other things.

Check the roadmap on the bugtracker. That gives you a good idea. We're going to have a full featured multiplayer capable max ready with 0.3.0. As from now on there are only cosmetics left. With latest svn you even get biospheres. That does not include AI.

That's sheduled after 0.3.0 since it's not an original feature.
