keys.xml does not work with $HOME/.maxr/ yet, sorry. This is on our todo list.
Any chance there's another maxr data folder install around?
Afair maxr tries to auto detect it's data folder by checking some default paths. You can override this using "MAXRDATA".
Try starting like that: "MAXRDATA=$HOME/src/maxr-svn-110521/data $HOME/src/maxr-svn-110521/src/maxr"
