Well, lo and behold! That hadn't occurred to me. I moved all my old maxr directories into an archive dir, instead of sitting around in $HOME/src/MAX/, and it works!

I was also curious why the game had the original max graphics, when I hadn't put them into the svn/data dir yet. Now, after I moved the old dirs into archive, I have the new graphics and everything from the correct directory ($PWD). A few complaints on load also disappear.

Now that I have a clue, I also notice that my max.xml has a line

<Gamedata Text="/home/miven/src/MAX/maxr-0.2.6/data//" />

Doh! Not the correct directory. That explains a few things. I guess I skimmed the file a bit too fast and thought everything was as it should be. I change this to point to symlink that points at the current project directory, because I change symlink when I download new source and successfully compile it.

Again, thank you for helping me through these small but puzzling issues.
