Hey it should work, but it seems to me its a DosBox problem or similar issue.
It didn't work for me with the US keyboard layout neither with the German, and not with an external keyboard driver.

So I tried the Dosbox internal keyboard mapper ( CTRL + F1 ) All info can be found here

Prior to changing the key mapping you need to add the path for the mapperfile in the dosboxMAX1.conf
under [sdl]

should look like this

Start DosBox and enter the Keymapper with CTRL +F1
I deleted the mapping for the brackets and replaced both of them to the "del" and "end" key.
and pressed on "save" and dosbox should tell you it saved to file.
After that you should be able to use the brackets in max, you have to press the first bracket twice to make it show up

I added some pictures to make it more clear.

I don't know why its not working on default, but oh well..
