Subject: Schildgenerator ??

Back in 1997 Interplay released a version 1.0 demo for M.A.X. that was about 38 megabytes. This v1.0 demo included an extra building that needed 30 turns to build. I think that extra building was one of the "alien" buildings. Unfortunately I can't find this demo on the internet. Only demo version 1.01 and 1.03a are available Disappointed

I looked into the matter. I found the building that was in the v1.0 demo and some other interesting things in the original executable and max.res files:

Monopole Mine: Specialized mining station for extracting magnetic monopoles.

No Picture

Recreation Center: No description (this was the building in the v1.0 demo!)






Shield: No description (nor full name in the executable, this building not made it in to the final game)





Master Builder: Specialized vehicle which transforms to become a new mining station.

No Picture

Maybe Life Support building: No description (nor name. The file name was LIFESP)





Enginer: (with the original graphic design)



I found a quick build screen graphic and a basic version of the MAX logo too Smiling

If anybody has this 1.0 demo it's probably Sal Grinning I remember that he digged into the alien buildings and in some he found on covers and pictures but not in game.

There is one ressource/raw material in the max.res file that hasnt been used in the game either.

And yes, I'm still interested in the v1.0 demo. It would be great to have and play it again. I don't know where or when did I lost my copy of it Disappointed

I have the original MAX and MAX2. Maybe I will install MAX2 and take a look into it's res file. But you are right, MAX2 sucks Disappointed

I tried to learn how to play with it a couple of times, but I always ended up uninstalling the whole thing and put the MAX2 cd into a very deep locker...

hm, but the graphics of the shield generator in the res-file are named SHIELDGN, S_SHIELD and so on.
Maybe they droped the idea of the monopol mine after the release of the demo and planed to use the grafics for a shield generator.

I tried to install MAX2. The installer said that MAX2 doesn't support my Windows version. So I went into the MAX2 dir on the install cd, and started Max2.exe straight away... it worked flawlessly Smiling

The only good things in MAX2 are the award winning unit portraits. They are beautiful. Except the portrait of the Repairer unit which is simply grabbed from MAX1, with the Recreation Center in the background :).

MAX2 uses exactly the same font files as MAX1 (The fonts can be viewed with the fallout fon format viewer and editor from TeamX.)

The intro is in Interplay's MVE format too (MAX1, Fallout1 and Fallout2 also uses this format). It can be played with MVE player from TeamX. MAX1's intro was way longer (and better) then MAX2's.

The MAX2 music tracks are in ACM format (also Interplay and Fallout related). They can be played and converted to and from wav files using utilities from TeamX: http://www.teamx.ru/eng/files/utils/

MAX2 uses lots of music elemets from MAX1. I think the music tracks are atmospheric enough to bring back the MAX1 feeling.

In MAX2.res, I found the original MAX1 chat window related graphics, the MAX1 factory building screen, the shadow griphic for land mines, the server selection sreen, the upgrade screen, the portrait picture of the Artilery, the mobil repairing unit, AND! the same quick build screen that I attached to my earlier post! Smiling
