Subject: Loading MAX Reloaded using the

Hi everybody,

I'm having a bit of trouble getting the MaxReloaded installer to install everything; see the changelog belowfor the exact files that are missing. I do have the original CD and have loaded a v.1.04 of the original DOS game to my hard drive, but apparently the loader can't find the required files (mostly .pcx files which I take it are converted from the DOS files on the fly?). How do I help the loader find my DOS install of MAX or, failing that, point to the CD?

Thanks!

Hi Smecty,

which version of maxr do you use? Can you attach the resinstaller.log?
Normally the resinstaller should work with an installed MAX verion or the CD.
When you use the resinstaller with the downloaded max version from abandongames, it will fail to install some files, because the version is incomplete. Only the newest SVN maxr version can run without these files.

Hi Eiko,

I've been using the 0.1.5 reinstaller that's been patched with the 0.1.5 patch. I use an install of the original DOS game from a CD, not an abandonware site's version. Below is part of the log that I'm quoting so you can see that some of the files load okay, but others don't (specifically, terrain and buildings); I've attached the full file in a .rar compressed file as well.

Thanks for your input!

Something smells fishy. Resinstaller is only avaible as 0.1 and directly from SVN of course.
MAXR is avaible as 0.1.5, 0.1.5 svn snapshot (aged) and directly from svn of course.

Did you get confused with the russians' resextractor?

Judging from your log and your statement about patch 0.1.5 I'd say you're running windows but there is no resinstaller.exe avaible yet (however you could build one for yourself) for windows. You can however download the inofficial missing files paket linked in the release post of maxr 0.1.5. Missing gfx, if any, can easily be obtained directly from SVN using the filebrowser of the bugtracker.

More input here please Smiling

BTW: Resinstaller prints some debug directly to the terminal. That might be interesting too.

Note, that the resinstaller and MAXR are two different programms.

so there are 2 posibilities:
1) You didn't use the resinstaller at all and used the 0.1.5 release of MAXR. Then you need to install the inofficial packet. It contains all necessary files.
http://www.maxthegame.de/bbs/showtopic.php?id=218

2) you have built the resinstaller yourself from svn. Then you have to use although the current SVN Version of MAXR, since the resinstaller doesn't work for the 0.1.5 Version.

I'm still a bit confused. What is the name and exact location of the "reinstaller" program? If you go to your page (http://www.maxthegame.de/bbs/docs.php?id=7) and click on the link "reinstaller" (http://www.maxthegame.de/bbs/docs.php?id=3) you'll go to the page that has the links for MAX-Reloaded_0.1.5.rar Basic package 0.1.5 for win32. So I thought that the 0.1.5.rar basic package *was* the reinstaller.

I've followed your instructions in 1) above and it now loads much more than it did before, but it still gets stuck when loading the buildings, please see the attached log file.

I think we're getting somewhere, but still not totally on the same page Wink

PS Thanks to all who have responded to my request for info! Happy

hm, that's strange...

the missing file is definitly in the inofficial packet. you can copy it manually to the right location 'buildings\fac_alien\img.pcx'

Subject: Re: Loading MAX Reloaded using the

Well, I re-downloaded the Unofficial data 0.1.2 and lo and behold there were no less than 3 extra files in that download for buildings fac_alien than there were in my previous download: effect.pcx, img.pcx, and info.pcx. All I can think of is that all of the files didn't download correctly the first time I downloaded the archive. Because now the game actually works! Grinning Thank you all so much!

Now that it is working properly I have to ask: what were the files that the installer needed from my old Interplay CD? I kept the CD in the drive so that if the installer needed those files it could find them there. The reason I ask this is that another great open-source revised game, Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe (http://www.openttd.com/) at a certain point in OpenTTD's install routine asks the user to direct the installer to the directory in which the regular TTD is installed so it can use its files. MaxReloaded didn't do this. Just curious.

Great work, guys!

The resinstaller is not yet available. It will replace the inofficial packet in the next release.

Ah, I see. Eagerly awaiting the next release.

BTW, I use the latest DosBox to run my old M.A.X. installation, and it works great.

Cheers,
