What is the best way to play the original game against AI under Windows?
Is it VMWare, VirtualPC or DosBox?
If possible, please explain your selection.

I use latest dosbox. It's as simple as opening it, typin mount [the folder where max is] as e:, typing cd e: and then typing run or go or max or whatever it was. :P

No skipping sound, no sound problems, no low fps, everything works just flawlessly.

Simple, easy and fast to use, that's why I use dosbox.

Thanks, but the sound is skipping always. I used dosbox in XP and not in 7 and regardless of CPU cycless (no I set 100 000) sounds skips like hell but the game is somewhat playable.
BTW, I use OpenGL resizing to 1000x700 and play in a window. Does it affect performance?

I don't know about the performance but if you use OpenGL that could be the cause of the problem and I run it in full screen too.

For me the best way is to use VDMSound (there's one version, v1.0.1.0 I guess, that has an easy-to-use configuration menu)
It's requires less power than DOSBox to run.

But if you want to play the original MAX1 online, DOSBox forever! lol

I don;t think VDM will cut it for me at Windows 7 64bit

should work with the xp virtual machine of windows 7
or we'll have to wait for vdmsound to support win7 too ( especially 64 bit ! )

I think VDMSound is dead and was assimilated by DosBOX.

I use DOSBox. Sound hacks some time and I notice some performance issues, but it might be only because my computer is quite old for DOSBox needs.
The game is more than playable.

I noticed problems when I tried to mount the game directory directly as a drive. For some reason the game only works if the DOSBox--perceived directory is the same as this of the original installation (or maybe I just set something up wrong).

Technically, DosBOX works well for me but it is only really playable in the first turns. Once my base grows, it requires A LOT of patience. For example, most of the time I need to wait 15 seconds to be able to move my mouse cursor.

My hadrware is not bad, too. It is Turion X2 1.6Ghz, 2GB ram.
