Subject: How-to use M.A.X. with modern OS

Additional note by nonsinn 2013-03-23:

So sorry Dfend is only for win-OS Undecided … but you can use dosbox without any frontend or with another frontend just visit the download page of dosbox… and read the reply below….

M.A.X.

This how-to is split, so all needed pictures below the right part…

Attention This is just *ONE* way, how you can play MAX on different modern OS (single player vs. AI — multiplayer via hamachi not tested yet)

You need:
  • The original CD-Data, or an old installation out of a backup you made years ago. Otherwise you can leave this how-to right now.
  • Internet access to download:
    • D-Fend Reloaded
    • Patch from MAX 1.01 to 1.04
    • Patch from MAX 1.01 to 1.03 Attention
      • Sal said in an older Topic (Post #7), 1.03 would contains a better IA…, and added this version to the '…diversen Sprachen' too (Post #9)

You get:
  • A fully operational copy of M.A.X. on any OS that is supported by d-fend/dosbox

Additional note by nonsinn:
Added the information to the patch 1.03

Prepare d-fend and dosbox

Information Changing the language of d-fend after you have added a game can sometimes cause some trouble. If this has happened, remove the game config and add it again. Watch out! Read what you delete, as by default — the game directory (and icon) is selected too!

You should know:
  • there is a dosbox-wiki
  • and you may read MOUNT if you want install direct from CD (keep in mind 8.3-limitation of DOS…).

Attention d-fend is just a GUI for dosbox, but it is easy to configure …and for some other old-games [some OT thoughts]

So let's begin:
  • Install d-fend (using the custom settings installation, you can select the 'portable-mode')
  • Execute the installed d-fend and configure the dosbox (picture A)
  • Attention Run this dosbox via double-click for the install step below Attention Don't use the feature of dfend — as you can see in this trouble-fix post!

Your 'VirtualHD'-directory (games normally included/installed in this directory):
  • Start d-fend
  • Open the game directory via *Extras* ⇒ *Open games folder*

If you have an old installed and patched copy of M.A.X. already, you may now directly jump to the Config below

Install MAX via included dosbox
  • Grab your CD-data and copy it to an short as possible path, like D:\max (⇒ you have to type less in dosbox — remember this is an 8.3-limitation)
  • Run the dosbox + install MAX {use C:\MAX for an attached config you can use later…)(install pictures)
  • Wait until the installation is finished
  • The setup should be self-explanatory, simply follow the given prompts.
  • You can now close the dosbox if the videos starting or grab Coffee
Information As default the d-fend sub-directory 'VirtualHD' is mounted as C:\ in the d-fend dosbox

Okay, so by now we have:
  • Installed d-fend
  • Setup dosbox
  • Installed MAX 1.01

We must now:
  • Patch from MAX 1.01 to 1.04
  • Take note: you need the right patch for your installed language or else you'll get an error message ingame.

Copy the patch data into the installed MAX directory (image b))

Windows You can run the patch.bat in explorer.
:others-non-bat-supported-OS: Run dosbox from d-fend. Change the directory to your installed MAX folder and run the patch.bat

Hurra The hard part is now done. High five.

Configuration for MAX
Alright, here's the easy part.

Use the attached maxrun-prof.zip
Unzip it and drag 'n' drop it into D-Fend

Or, *File* *Import* *Import prof file…* and select maxrun.prof

Furthermore, I installed M.A.X in ».\VirtualHD\MAX\« if you've installed M.A.X in another directory, open the maxrun.prof with a text-editor (no word or open office) search the ».\VirtualHD\MAX\« and replace it with ».\VirtualHD\ <your\new\paths to\MAX\> « then save the file and follow the step above.

Attention Run the setup to check your sound settings!

Otherwise (don't know why ever this should be needed) follow the image attached.

That's great! Where should I put it?

I can simply move it to the MAX forum and PIN it on top.

Or I can reformat this as an article. Thing is we dropped the old MAX navigation part entirly to save some space there. So I have no idea where to file this article in the navigation tree. I'm open for suggestions of course.

Hi it's me again… and here is the Solution for all OS Innocent

For those who don't have a Windows PC or won't use Dfend, here is an alternative solution:

Attached to this post you'll find a dosbox-conf file for dosbox version 0.74.

All needed links are in the How-To above…

Here's how it works:
  • Download dosbox for your system (for some Tux OS are this nice apt-get solution available…)
  • Install it
  • Download the config attached
  • Modify the second last line of the config file ( mount C directory where you want store your old games -freesize 1024 ), only the underlined stuff as you can see in this MOUNT article.

Start dosbox like this:
path to dosbox executable -conf location+name (to the config file you can download below)

E.q.
Windows "D:\games with dosbox\dosbox.exe" -conf "C:\users\dosbox-0.74_maxrun.conf"
Tux dosbox -conf ~/.dosbox/dosbox-0.74_maxrun.conf
