Subject: MAXR on Oracle VirtualBox
I have a weird issue that isn't a major thing, but I'm interested to know why it happens.

I have a MacBook Pro running the latest version of OSX and the Mac version of MAXR doesn't work on it. I'm not really a Mac person (I got it for work as it has such a strong battery life), so I figured it was either my problem or (regardless) I want to be on the latest version of MAXR so I installed Oracle VirtualBox and deployed a Windows 7 VM.

I have MAX (GOG.com release) and MAXR installed on there, but MAXR requires me to enable 3D acceleration as it will not launch. The original MAX game does launch without 3D acceleration enabled (but the mouse cursor, even with acceleration enabled, doesn't work properly; another win for MAXR)! I'm just wondering why MAX will launch without 3D acceleration, but MAXR will not?

I'm SO pleased that I can play MAXR on the Mac now (although I have no time to play yet!), so thanks to everyone as always as I will enjoy playing once I get some free time again.

Although maxr doesn't make much use of real GPU rendering yet, we initialize the main window with openGL support, which I think will need the 3d acceleration support in virtual box. Maybe we already use the hardware accelerated rendering at some points in the code. But it is still a task for the future to implement full hardware rendering. It's done mostly in software now so CPU usage of maxr is very high.

Thank you very much, it's useful to know why this issue differs between MAXR and MAX. CPU rendering also explains why the laptop runs hot when I play it (running a VM and running MAXR). I should have bought a Windows laptop ...
