Subject: Multiplayer Hosting
Hey guys. First of all, I wanted to give a shout out to all you devs for taking on this endeavor to resurrect MAX. I was (and still am) a HUGE follower of this game. Back in the day, I actually created my own gaming site dedicated to MAX2 called 'max2.net' (no longer around for obvious reasons), which was part of the gamestats network. Was a lot of fun until MAX2 turned out to be a steaming pile of shyte...

Anyway, getting to my questions...

I got the game installed no problem at all (I actually had an original MAX CD in my storage). Game boots up and plays fine but I'm a little confused on how to host a multiplayer game. When I get to the TCP/IP host screen the IP field is blank and not editable. My questions are:

1. Can you play outside of a LAN?
2. How do you configure the host IP?

Thanks in advance for the answers.

1.) Sure. That's what maxr is all about.
2.) Your hosts IP is your computers IP. You have to find it out on your own for now. If you are connected through a router to the internet ask it for your IP and learn about port forwarding (NAT).

I'm currently writing a manual for playing maxr the first time where I'll go into some details on this topic as well.

Welcome to the bbs Smiling Hope you'll stick around.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I figured it all out with some ingenuity. Basically, here are the steps I followed:

For Win:
1. run 'ipconfig' to get your pc's 'private' IP. Depending on which type of router you're using this will be a subnet of something like 10.0.1.* or 192.168.1.* (former is Mac, latter is Win)
2. Connect to your router's admin console and map the MAX port (I think 56800 is the default) to your pc's private IP (I did both UDP and TCP)
3. Somewhere in your router admin console it will display the IP of your modem, write this down or commit to memory.
4. Test that you've correctly configured the port by running 2 MAX instances; use one as the host and the other as the client. On the Host instance, start a TCP/IP Host game. On the client, start a TCP/IP host client and enter the IP of your modem from step 3. If you can connect, you've successfully mapped the port

Hope this helps others until you finish the documentation.

Hello. I played MAX until came XP . I tried someday with wine and didn't wor very well.
So I'm happy with this project. Grinning
I compiled the source in my kubuntu 8.10
Then i executed reinstaller and search the very old cd of max in my archives.
It worked. Smiling
But not installed ( don't execute make install )
i copied the maxr green archive to the data folder. And the game works.
But I can't play anybody.
I'm alone in maps. ( Single player )
I noticed too that many options like savegame or investigation and more are not implemented.
I try too to conect in multiplayer mode with 2 max in my computer.
I can see the other player. See the map, talk, ... but when the client press ok says a message in console of the game : "Tuxcommand is not ready"
( Tuxcomand is the default name that i used for the one of the programs who host the game)
I would like to know :
- There is a way for play with other people on internet? ( play against me will be boring Disappointed )
- There is a server or something like that who meet the people who wants to play MAX ?
- There is an svn version where i can update and see how develops that project?
- There is a guide for playing?
Thanks very much.

Hey I did it !
I can play against me Disappointed
The trick is to push a red circle near the name of your player. It becomes green.
And says that that player is ready.
