Subject: MAX 3D Tech Demo in Unity
Hello fellow Members!
Not tooooo long ago Duke approached me with the idea to work more in https://unity3d.com/
And as usual, many months passed ...with nothing Grinning I liked the idea of being interactive with the 3d Units Ski and me had built ages ago, so yeah. Here is a small tech demo.

Webversion
http://sal4.de/demo2.html

33 MB in assets

Controls
W,A,S,D to move around and Mouse look!

What has it in?
-no game play mechanics
-no optimizations with low poly models
-no whatever would make it into a game, like top down camera, click able units.. and so on Wink

But you can wonder around, check out the models and yeah. Thats it.

Hello M.A.X. fan community,

Wanted to try launching M.A.X. on an Android phone using DOSBox, but that absolute mouse aiming has an offset because of original relative mouse movement. Guess that is not gonna be possible to play.

But recreating M.A.X. would be interesting. I don't know of other similar M.A.X. games. M.A.X. could use some updates to the interface and maybe even create a optional hexagon map mode. It is possible and easy in Unity to switch to an isometric camera view. A hybrid 2D/3D M.A.X. could be made that would make it crossplatform on PC and Mobile, adjusting graphical settings according to specs.

Though I am more in it for the Single Player, so if it isn't possible to request Interplay for a non-commercial use of parts of M.A.X. source, 3D models and code, then adding AI would be a pain.

Then again I am leaving my profession as a Web Developer towards Game Development, yet I have not made/published a single game. Have been tampering with Unity for years though.

BTW your Linux version of the tech demo works. Though I was surprised that I also controled the Surveyour not just the camera, thought why it was running away from me. Laughing

Hey Pendrokar!
Welcome on board =D

As far as we know the source of the original M.A.X. is gone as far as I know long time ago. There have been several approaches from many people without good news. ( it seems to be lost forever with no backups)

I still love the SP too, though the MP part of M.A.X. was always something I wanted to play but couldn't cause of the bugs.
A Web Developer going Game Dev sounds good, do you have any work in progress things to show?=)

I am not a Dev at all, so this Unity Engine was a nice way to take a look into game dev.

About the tech demo:
I also about to add different "players" so you can change the view with a key. Also there is an day/ night cycle prepared, but not activated yet. Thanks for the linux feedback =)

p.s. you control the Scanner too Wink

Lost source code, that's sad. Most of these remade models are well done, all that is missing are some fine textures.

This tech demo could quickly be turned into a turn based game using a library from the Unity Asset store like this one.
https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/#/content/2392
As it offers both Hexagon and Square tile layouts. Except I cannot afford to spend money on a non-commercial product.

I had also tried the Unreal Development Kit, which was harder to learn unlike Unity. Unreal Engine 4 is now also available, which Epic Games fine tuned to be more like Unity. Sadly not free, but has the loophole of paying 20$ and having an unupdateable game engine.

Are you willing to share the source for all this?

To quote our member Mague about the source code (or any assets as it seems) from 2009
Quote:
Also, I have been informed, that Mr. Taylor from Interplay again confirmed, that the source code is still lost:
"
... As far as I know, there is no change regarding the source code. When the company closed down the Irvine offices, there was very little done to preserve the source code or any assets. We went through many of the old machines a few months back, but very little of use was recovered. I personally believe that most of the old assets are lost.
..."

I have to check out the UDK, especially UDK 4. 20$ seems to be a reasonable price for a month, though I hope they offer some kind of trial period (which I believe is unlikely, but would be nice)
The library from the Unity Store looks definitely nice, but 25$ oh well, have to think about it.

About sharing this, so far there are no plans, just because I haven't thought of that yet.
But to be honest, all this handcrafted models should not dust in my folders for too much longer. I have to think about those things. Any particular things you are interested in?

To really try to make a game like MAX definitely would require more 3d models. I am still missing many buildings, though that shouldn't take more then some weeks of modeling. Animations are rather easy usually in Unity. What I didn't grasp yet, was how to rotate wheels dynamically.
My shader skills in Unity are below basic sadly, have to work on that.

The initial idea of this Techdemo was to have something to show to companies, where I want to apply for an internship.
So yeah, lets see how that goes.
