Subject: 3D Models
Hi Guys,

Sorry, I've been very quiet recently!

I thought I could post in the coding forum, but I'll out this here instead so apologies if it's the wrong area.

Don't get me wrong, I like the graphics of MAXR, but what do you guys think about adding 3D models (pre-rendered or even real-time) being added? So questions I would have would be:

1. Would this annoy anyone (that has contributed artwork for example)?
2. Are there people with skills in 3D Max, etc. that could use models?
3. Is there capacity within the team to actually do it?

I only ask because I noticed that this 3D Model Pack was available:

https://www.turbosquid.com/...3ds/666504

It's just an example, but it has many of the units in there and if someone was to license this on behalf of the project, does anyone think that it could entice new players to the game? Would existing players like to see modern 3D units prowling the battlefield?

It's probably me just having crazy thoughts as always, but I would be interested to see what you guys think?

I think if you can adapt them to make them a little "futuristic" then it's good. Smiling
In my dream, clans may have a different units model, or maybe when an unit is upgrader over 1000 gold it could has a different graphic. Innocent
And more variety into buildings! Grinning yayyy

I'm not in the team neither made 3D graphics but...
1. no problem; players can already play with original MAX design. We could have an option ingame to use the design we desire. Smiling

But, if you also mean to transform the game into a 3D game... Hmmm... maybe an isometric system would be okay but...

oh, wait, it's $1500 Surprised

That is an awesome idea! I love it.

My thinking was using the models to render 3D vehicles into 2D objects, but keep the overhead view. It wont have any impact on gameplay, but might make the game appeal to new players and / or just give players another set of skins to use if they want to. The only issue that I can see is that the graphics for the landscapes might need to be upgraded as there would potentially be a clash with very detailed / accurate vehicles and a reasonably basic 2D landscape. I'm not suggesting it would be true 3D; that would be very difficult and basically M.A.X. 2. However, I'm sure there could be options.

The cost is not an issue if there's the ability to pay for it, which might be possible if the Devs think there is any potential to using these models in MAXR. I guess we'll just have to see. Happy

It does not work this way. It's not good thing to replace only half of unit graphics. It looks really weird when 3d tank stands next to 2d building. Either we find complete set of models, that is suitable for MAX, or leave it as is. Consistency is good stuff.

Maybe it is better to find an artist for the same money (or even more) to make models exactly for MAX. And it should be a complete set of models, with every unit included, not the partial one.

That's mostly me and no I'd not be annoyed. I made this with my poor skills because no one else was around.

We do have all the unit files as 3D models. It's mostly about proper rendering.

Hell no. Keshm started to make new very great looking renders but disappeared before finishing all. He also never pushed anything to the repo so no render actually made it into the game. This happens often sadly. He probably lost interest or sth. Not complaining here since he wasn't payed or sth Smiling

Subject: Re: 3D Models
hi, just thought I would share as this maybe appropriate place and time to do so. Hopefully this does not sound like a thread hijack, I just wanted to explain why I have been working on what I have Wink

I've had some time on my hands for a few months and so I've been pushing my hobby project forward. The aim of which was to 1) Learn how to make a game and 2) Learn about and implement game A.I. 3) to have a framework for a sell-able game.

I've always been a MAX fan and wanted to reproduce it, including the A.I. which no one has really wanted to tackle. It seemed easier for me to write my own implementation which I could then build the A.I. aspect alongside. Rather than learning how MaxR was coded etc. and trying to get my AI to work with it.

A crucial decision was 3D or not to 3D, after much deliberation I flipped a coin and went 3D.
Which means I have been slowly creating game ready assets in 3D styled after the MAX originals for speed more than anything. As I cannot for obvious reasons use these commercially they maybe of use to this community. Here is a quick screen-shot of some of the models in my game environment.

You may recognize some of these as models from Ski and Sal (hope you don't mind, was not aiming to do anything public with this when I started), I had to re-hash the models and sort U.V. maps but the essence in a lot of cases is still their work. While others are mine, as is all the attempt at texturing... it's all a work in progress as I'm brushing off old skills and learning new ones.

If your interested in what I have done model wise so far let me know, I can always post some images of individual models to give a better idea. Let me know your thoughts / interest

Cheers Wink
