Hello all MAX fanatics!

I am PK from Poland. For nearly past 4 years I play in Master of Orion II on kali serwer 138 (http://www.kali.net). I used to play MAX at home lan with my friends long time ago. Kali is a program which allows to connect two or more users via internet in some kind of virtual connection simmilar to local LAN. Kali has special driver which help MAX to bypass error when you choose HOST network game. So thx to kali program its now possible to play MAX in online mode! Human vs human games on internet ARE POSSIBLE! I played already TWO games and all seemed ok, few small crashes happend.

But not all things are so cool. Some bugs which I am aware of:
1. Turn based mode is totaly screwed. I tested it with 2 different users and it always crashes very soon on main map.
2. Game is working very slow. Game works slow on turn based and simultaneous mode. Since TB sucks, the sim mode is only way! But it works great ufff
3. MAX crashes. MAX can crash in any operation and in unkown time. MAKE sure to have AUTOSAVE ON!

To play MAX on kali you need:
1. register free account on kali : http://www.kali.net - register/ scroll to bottom.
2. Installed and working kali program. Install is easy. But some routers have problems with kali and special configuration must be applied (to router)! I know how so just ask.
3. I tested 1.04 version - I assume its latest so you need one.
4. Configured MAX shortcut on kali.
5. Knowledge about making lobbies on kali.
6. A good DSL line will help!

Yeah playin MAX online isnt new for us, we even had some kind of competition :rolleyes: Well the problem is, MAX doesnt work fine online, same for LAN. it keeps crashing very often if you dont use Win95. We were playing through KAHN ( similar to Kali ) and it worked but very buggy and sometimes laggy.

I have a question, what does it mean ?!


Does it really work? What do you mean exactly? What kind of error ? I am very eager to know that.
What kind of chrashes happend last time you played, until which turn?


Our fresh member Tutenchamun2 stated that it shall work better autosave TURNED OFF. Its a tricky game, you have to save yourself when there is no action goin on. A good idea is to use more save slots every round

To MM´s MAX:
It does wrok and have some special features but the networkcode isnt 100% bugfree. You should try it out and make your own experience, and report some found problems...if there are some

I just played and tested max gold from Russian`s edition. Its super slow, with errors in graphics and a radar on start (!) game looks unplayable. I hope they will fix it.

German edition looks much better. I still want to test it with some players!

About error. Normally when kali is not running and you will choose to host game via network game displays some error about not having ipx driver or something like that. Dont remember exactly but me and 2 other players with who I tested max had this problem until kali driver fixed it.

I played around 70 turns of online game (2 games) and had few crashes. Maybe turning off autosave will help. But in the middle of battle who has time to remember about saving!?

It has MAX topic link which redirects you into my board. In this topic I am writing all I know about MAX and etc. Web site is about Master of Orion II - which is my favorite game. After playing it 4 years with humans on kali and achiving all I could get ( including the no1 place of international player ladder ) I seriously get bored and returned to MAX. Max has more action and battles then Moo2.

I want to play max alhpa and old max with anyone! Even if I am going to loose in mm`s max I dont care - fun is what I care the most! Write me on icq 164417961 if you want to play with me! The challange is waiting

What kind of OS you are usin? Because the " ipx bug " isnt there if you are usin the right IPX network driver with the right OS ( like the old win95 ipx driver in win95 ^^ )

The thing is, right now I dont have much time. Tomorrow will be a LAN at Duke, hehe. That will be alot of fun

I am askin myself why its lagging on kali, it shouldt lag. It doesnt lag much with KAHN, as far as I can remember.

Because we alll have Win2000 or XP its a bit difficult to play MAX in multiplayer or in general with good sound and an average speed.
Anyway .. right now I am trying to get MAX work with LAN running of a ramdisk, described here
The whole system boots up fine, but I cant get IPX support.
The system says it want to be reboot to update stuff and this isnt possible with a ramdisk

To make it short: Do you know how to make a DOS NETWORK bootdisk? I would like to add it to the windows 95 bootdisk to get IPX support.
I have all needed file I just dont know how to add them in the autoexec.bat and config sys ... Do you have a hint for me?

I use xp pro sp2 but with no ipx driver installed. I had one from original windows drivers but it didnt help. I am not a fan on win95. You can use kali to play. Kahn never worked for me. How you force it to work? Some guide maybe?

I dont see a reason to create cds with w95. Its far better to run Virtual PC from Microsoft and connect it into internet! I got the install

Never underestimate windows 95 Its really the best choice if you want to play MAX in Multiplayer. We are talking here about 4 players with big battles and the turn clock showing 150

A IPX driver emulation is in GIT too, Sefinux postet a thread about it. But he is gone (?!) , I think I scared him away with my noob skills ^^

Kahn works with windows 95 / 98 and its runs max fine, no choppy.

Anyway, I will try out Kali then. I let you know when it worked and how good it worked.

Ok I can install any windows. I have to check Khan and new ipx driver. If you are going to check kali alone you may expirience some problems I solved already. Let me know when you want to test it and we can do it! I am free every day.

Could be kahn being really dead? Thats unbelieveble!

If you would use Kahn on win95 /98 you would have to install the old IPX driver from Novell ( default IPX driver on the system )

If you want to play MAX with Xp on LAN you have to download a new IPX driver for xp -> http://download.novell.com/

Spmething like the "Novell Client 4.91 SP1 for Windows 2000/XP English"

I dont have much time righ now but its important to chose " BINDERY NETWARE 3.X " at the installation.
